John M. Burson

John is the developer of the CAPP * Computer-Aided Profit Plan for Professional Service Firm Financial Control spreadsheet template that automates the strategic profit planning process.  The spreadsheet template is free and can be downloaded from this website.

September, 2000, he was published in A&E Business, Planning and Control For The Non-Financial Manager.

August 4, 1997, he was published in The Zweig Letter No. 221, Guest spot: John Burson on income statements.   The Zweig Letter is a publication of Zweig White & Associates, Inc., 600 Worcester Street, Natick, MA 01760.

November 16, 1996, he presented a seminar on Strategic Profit Planning for Design Firm Financial Control at The 1996 AIACC California Practice Conference, Oxnard, CA.

In September of 1995, John presented a program on Strategic Profit Planning for Design Firm Financial Control at The National Conference on the Building Industry held at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN. The conference was co-sponsored by AIA Tennessee, Construction Management PIA, Corporate Architects PIA, et. el.

In November of 1992, John presented a one-day workshop to the Louisiana Architects Association on Planning for Profit using computer-aided techniques.

In October, 1991, John presented a seminar for the Financial Managers Group at the Dallas roundtable on Project Budgeting & Control using electronic spreadsheets.

In November, 1990, John was a guest lecturer at The University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Design. He presented a three-hour lecture to the Financial and Economic Issues class on financial control techniques for management in the design profession and concepts related to the development and implementation of a strategic business plan using computer spreadsheet templates.

John has been an associate editor for the FMG Journal (now A+E Business). He has published a series of five articles on spreadsheet techniques for financial management in the design profession in the FMG Journal.

John Burson has served as Controller for a medium-sized design firm for 30 years. He has over 7 years experience in public accounting with CPA firms. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a major in accounting from the University of Arkansas in 1965. He has over 45 years experience working in public and private accounting. John has developed spreadsheets for design firm financial management since 1980.

John retired July 15, 2010 after 30 years as a Design Firm Controller and is now available for independent consulting to help you with your financial planning and control.
